Our green oak is felled locally and is milled-to-order. We also have a supply of sawn oak remnants in our workshop.
It is said that an oak takes 300 years to grow, 300 years to live and 300 years to die. English oak, also known as common or pedunculate oak, is one of Britain's most iconic trees.
The timber is fairly heavy, has a high mechanical strength, is durable and dense.
Oak has a medium moisture movement and medium to coarse texture.
It is slow to dry and has a tendancy to split and shrink but the heartwood is durable and resistant to preservatives.
It can be hard to work with hand tools due to it’s density and pre-drilling is advised for nailing and screws.
Stainless fixings are recommended as the wood has acidic properties that can corrode iron.
